How to build a garden fish pond (update)

A big thanks to all the people who have viewed and commented on my video 'how to build a garden pond' I wasnt expecting no where near that amount of view icon smile How to build a garden fish pond (update) last week I got a notification that my video was the most viewed in that month and stood at number one in there search...blown away icon smile How to build a garden fish pond (update) Anyhow..since the build there has been a few changed that I think I shuould mention. Firstly filtration.. the water was still slightly green so I decided to upgrade the pump and filtration. pump from 5000 l/h to 18000 l/h filter box from 11000 I/h to 33000 I/h UV clarifier from 8 watt to 30 watt. I have also heightened my water fall too. The pressurized system that I originally had was a bugger to clean properly and the UV wasnt enough to kill off the algae, but now the water is so clear that you would swear you could drink it. The picture in this video are a bit deceiving and the pond looks very shallow, however its 750mm deep, thats how clear it is now. I also binned the pressure filter idea for gravity feed and this has turned out to be very simple and quick to clean. I have also fitted a water splitter from the pump so that I can control the amount of water going through the filter and the waterfall independantly, even to the point of turning the waterfall off without it effecting the filtration. icon smile How to build a garden fish pond (update) the last part of the pond to be done is the bottom and the lighting. the plan is to have the bottom (once cleaned) filled with smooth black quartz and then have some blue underwater ...

We watched this grass snake eat a whole live frog in our back garden pond in Ipswich, Suffolk UK. It took the snake 20 minutes to devour the whole frog, but I have edited it to 5 minutes.

Digging the garden pond with Steve.I came over and helped him dig his garden pond. Digging the deep end of the goldfish pond. Digging sucks but it is gonna be so worth it in the end. This garden pond is going to be sweet. Design and having a plan is the key. Steve has a plan for his garden pond

this was a bunch of fun planting all of these plants out in my pond. I really made a mess of of my pond. The plants are bumping with the natural daylight. The algae that I have could be a bit of a problem as i don't have too much water flow. I am hoping this won't be the case, but the plants are super happy to be outside in the bright sun.

How to build a garden fish pond

How to build a garden pond These pictures are the steps I took when building my pond in my garden. The old small pond was having serious algae issues, so I decided to go big on proper filtration. The Filter I ended up with was a 11000 litre/hour Bio mechanical pressurized unit with built in UV clarifier, I also bought a 5000 litre/hour pump with all the spare capacity I made the decision to dig out and extend my Pond and also add a waterfall and fountain. The original pond was raised and formed a bit of a sitting area so the route for me was to continue this theme all the way round. Once all the digging and shaping was complete a concrete foundation was poured into the shuttering that was supported by the bricks. Once the concrete was set, it was time to get the trowel out and the trusty spirit level and the brickwork was completed using a mix of 4 to 1 (sand to cement). The underlay is one of the most important things to consider, it is the done thing to get hold of some old carpet, this is both very strong and very tough and is ideal. I went to a carpet shop and asked what they did with the carpets that they remove when laying new ones they told me to help myself to whats in their skip....yay!!!....result. So with the entire pond now trimmed with carpet its time to install the liner. Best tip here is to take your time, and slowly fill with water, gently pulling away any crease. That done, its now just a simple matter of completing the brickwork and cutting and cementing ...

Build Your Own Garden Pond

Although you could pay a professional to build your garden pond for you, many people decide to create it by themselves.  If you are considering doing it yourself you will be glad to know that it isn't as difficult a task as you might expect.  The main thing is to do a bit of research on the fundamentals of how to go about it.  Get a few good books or search the web for step-by-step instructions and advice.  To get you started, here is a brief overview of the basics to creating that perfect pond for your garden.

Where to place your pond

First off, you will need to work out which is the best place in your garden to begin digging the hole that will be the basis of your pond.  The size of the garden will determine the width and depth of the pond.  If you plan on keeping fish in it, it is important to consider the depth of the pond.  It needs to be deep enough to give the fish plenty of space to move around in, especially if the upper water level freezes over.  Another way to keep your fish –and plant life- happy is to avoid positioning the pond under trees or other shaded areas.  Make sure the sun can reach your pond.

Once the hole is dug, the next step is to place a liner in it.  This is vital to prevent the water in the pond from draining away.

The need for filtration

During the building of your pond, you will need to plan how you intend to filter the waste that will build up in it.  A rule of thumb is that the larger the area of water, the more efficiently this waste can be dealt with.  A good filter can be picked up from any pet or garden store.  Also purchase some gravel.  This will be needed to create a bed in the pond, which will control bacteria.

Once the pond is built, it is advisable to introduce fish to the pond one at a time. Plonking all of your intended fish in the pond all at the same time will disrupt the natural filtering of the bacteria.

Finally, be sure to clean the pond on a regular basis.  This will compliment the work of the filter and help maintain a healthy pond.
