Location

Decide first what part of the backyard you want to your fish pond to be situated before going out and buying anything. Select an area where it is far from the trees since many aquatic plants, like lilies, need a sufficient amount of sunlight to grow.

Choose an area where there are no falling leaves that can make cleaning a nightmare. Do not place your pond on low areas since large volumes of rainwater might run off and accumulate in the pond during rainy seasons. Not to mention, these runoff water might contain fertilizers, pesticides, and other harmful materials.

Place your pond in an area where it can be best appreciated and seen. The sense of building a pond is for you to enjoy it. Select a location where it can be best viewed (i.e. the sitting area or a patio in the garden).

Types of Pond

After choosing where you want your pond to be located, it is now time to select what type of pond you want. The two types of pond are the following:

ABS plastic preformed ponds are usually used for small ponds that can contain up to 250 gallons of water. This type of pond comes in a variety of sizes and shapes such as hourglass, rock gardens, and kidney. Waterfalls and formed spillways are also available.

Pond lines or liners are used for any size of pond. The sizes available for this kind of pond is 10’ x 15’ to 20’ x 25’ or larger. This can allow you to build a pond to your preferred size either by using them individually or by connecting together two or more pond liners with a special adhesive.

These pond liners are very heavy especially the large ones. They are usually made of rubber. Using pond liners can be quite a fun and creative experience since this type may allow you to decide on the shape of your pond. However, you need to be aware that a 19’ x 26’ liner will not create a pond of the same size. In choosing the proper size liner, it is imperative to know the width (W), length (L), as well as the maximum depth (MD) at their widest points. After which, use
the formula L+(MD*2) by W+(MD*2).

This means that a 10 foot long by 5 foot wide by 2 foot deep pond may require a 14’ x 9’ pond liner so as to make an edge above the water level. It is important to let a professional pond developer help in determining the pond size liner you need.

Dig It

Now that you’ve decided on the location and the type of your fish pond, it is time to dig it. The average size of the pond is at least 18" deep at its deepest point. However, 24" is better. With this depth, the fishes may be allowed to stay in the pond during winter time without freezing. Inclusion of planting shelves in the design will make it easier to place emergent lilies and plants.

Filtering

After accomplishing the above tasks, it is high time for you to think about filtration. It may be better to ask your pond professional about this topic. Just keep in mind that whichever filter you choose, ensure that it is cleaned at a regular basis so that the water will remain clear. Utilizing a filter may also hinder the mosquitoes from making the pond their breeding ground.

All Set

And now, all you have to do is add your fish and you are good to go!

A Quick Guide to Wall Water Fountain Styles

Wall water fountains are among the most popular fountain styles because of their space efficiency and visual impact. A basic wall water fountain is much like a print or painting, adding dimension to a flat surface. Wall water fountains include so much variety, however, that they can do much more, acting as a focal point in a way a framed photograph or other piece of static wall art can’t match. Don’t underestimate the role of motion, sound and light; wall fountains provide all of these through the soothing medium of flowing water.

Let’s tour the basic styles of wall water fountains to get a better idea about which of them would suit your home or office décor the best. Wall fountains are usually divided by the materials they’re made out of, but there are lots of different kinds, so this list is by no means complete – in fact, many wall fountains combine multiple materials. Browse serenityhealth.com to see a complete selection beyond what this article describes.

Stone: Slate and Marble

Slate and marble are the most common types of stone used in wall water fountains. Marble provides a classic look that works well with white, off-white and other clean, reflective color schemes. Water enhances polished marble’s reflective qualities, adding extra brightness to a room. Slate will also work with lighter colors by providing a gentle contrast. In addition, slate has the advantage of allowing both rough-hewn and smooth styles. This makes it compatible with a wider variety of interior styles. It often works well with a darker color scheme, especially since it can be cut and colored beyond a basic smooth gray to present a natural-looking surface.

Stone fountains are often bracketed with metal, though some styles include rough or smooth stone basins instead. Aside from marble and slate, fountains in other stones and similar styles (including cemented pebble surfaces and concrete) are available.

Metal: Copper and Steel

Copper and stainless steel are the two most common metals for wall water fountains, either as borders and basin linings or as the face of the fountain itself. Stainless steel is ideal for sleek, modern interior designs, including “retro-modern” 60s-and 70s-style interiors. Copper supports more traditional styles, as its warm color goes well with wood and earth tones. You can actually get a number of different types of copper in a wall water fountain. Copper fountains are treated to prevent metal oxidization (the process that turns it green) but it can be artificially aged and etched.

Sculpted Ceramic for Home and Garden

For a truly Old World feel you can go with sculpted ceramic. These fountains often feature traditional Asian and European designs: Buddhas, lions, green men and angels, for example. These are popular garden fountains but can often be mounted indoors, where they complement rough brick and other textured walls.

Glass and Mirror-Style Wall Water Fountains

Glass, including mirrored surfaces, is an excellent choice to brighten up a room. Furthermore, mirrored fountains can actually serve as mirrors; the constant flow of water keeps them clean and polished, while the flow of water is usually not so great as to seriously distort what you see. Transparent and smoked glass is often used in business environments along with a stencil of the company’s name or logo. A more recent development is hand painted glass. The paint stays waterproof and turns the fountain into a true moving painting.

Landscaping Your Garden

Do you feel that your existing garden needs a makeover? Has your garden become a wasteland of plants needing trimming or has your plants started to develop weeds as their neighbors? Do you want your garden to be a place where you can relax and unwind, have a romantic dinner, or a picnic with family and friends? If you feel that your garden needs a face lift, then you might think about doing some landscaping. If you have the financial capability, you could hire talented professionals to get the job done. But if your budget is tight, you can actually get the job done yourself by putting your creative juices to work and enlisting someone's help like a family member or a friend to be of assistance.

If you plan on doing the task of landscaping yourself, it is important that you have a clear, mental picture of how you would want your garden to exactly look like. Draw it out and have a theme or point of interest in mind. Try to picture out how you would want the plants to be arranged and where the flowers will be situated. Have in mind the kinds of plants that you would be planting and the types of flowers that you would want to be blooming in your garden. Imagine how you would divide the space especially if constrained or limited. Don't make your garden look boring by positioning plants in traditional rows. True, planting them in such a manner makes your garden look neat and tidy but try to create unique arrangements that would make your garden stand out. It is imperative that you do not make an effort to copy your neighbor's garden. I don't think your neighbor will be too happy about it if he knows you are making a carbon copy of his garden. Attempt to group the same flowers in a certain location to create a bold splash of color or if you desire the mix of different colors in an area try mixing the flowers of different colors together in one area.

Think about whether you want your garden to have a tree or several trees for that matter. You can even try to put in it a pond where you can have fishes. A small pathway of rocks could give balance to your garden. You can even have flowering vines climb over your fences to create interest.

Beautifying your garden rests in your hands. With some creativity and imagination, you are well on your way to having that dream garden you've been wanting.
