Water Garden Bridges the Centuries

Everyone knows that water is one of the most abundant – and popular – chemicals on Earth. It’s so popular, in fact, that anyone over the age of ten (and some who are even younger) can probably tell you that the chemical formula for water is H2O. So we know that a water molecule is comprised of two hydrogen atoms, and one oxygen atom that are firmly held together by covalent bonds. We could delve further into the properties of water, as well as its uses, its importance to the planet, and its uniqueness.
Water is irreplaceable and irresistible, but the quality that makes it so is indescribable. It’s mysterious, magical, magnificent, majestic, magnetic, and much, much more. Of course, it’s necessary for survival; but, beyond that, some ethereal aspect of it has enchanted every culture throughout the ages. From time immemorial, people have brought it into their backyards for use in various decorative incarnations, such as water gardens, fountains, spouts, pools, streams, and waterfalls.

In ancient Chinese and Japanese gardens, the harmonious balance of water, stone, and vegetation was paramount. This was partly achieved by the strategic placement of garden bridges. Early Romans living along the Mediterranean used its waters to stay cool during the blazing summers, by building gazebos or summerhouses over the sea itself, or channeling it to create fountains and pools for their gardens. Victorian England was rife with elaborate, formal water gardens, complete with colorful koi and garden bridges. French water gardens, often built in front of the homes, were unequalled in extravagance and magnitude.

The blend of elements in all of these gardens was crucial. Along with the sheer beauty of the water, the sound of its movement in concert with the wind in the trees, plants, and reeds, added to the soothing effect. Proper positioning of stones, along with myriad types of plants and vibrant flowers, was also fundamental. An integral component, the garden bridge, essentially tied the whole scene together, giving it a sense of continuity, wholeness, and intimacy.

Today, the tradition of the water garden has not only been revived, but is going stronger than ever. From simple reflecting pools and ponds, to casual and formal water gardens, to waterfalls and fountains, people are letting their creativity flow, in order to create the closest thing to nirvana that they can have in their own backyards. As varied as these water gardens are, the one ingredient that’s still central to the aesthetics is the garden bridge. And the one place that offers the largest selection of garden bridges is CedarStore.com.

You’ll find treated pine, red cedar, and white cedar foot bridges, Japanese foot garden bridges, and 3-foot-wide garden bridges, from 4 to 14 feet long, in plank, single and double rail, spindle rail, picket, and half-picket styles. There’s also a selection of maintenance-free wood and vinyl bridges from 3 to 6 feet wide, and 6 to 16 feet long.

Add a Water Garden to Your Landscape

Garden ideas and themes are incomplete without a waterscape. Water gardens can be created both indoors and outdoors. Indoor water gardens can be maintained more easily than the outdoor one.

One may wish to create this type of garden for water plants and to breed fish. One may also wish to create a water garden only to hear the pleasant sound of the water fall. It is necessary to decide the reason and theme for your garden as the size of the garden depends on this. A small pond limits the number of fishes or the plants one would like to accommodate.

On the basis of the fishes or the plants the waterscape can be loosely categorized into two types:
* Koi pond
* Water garden

The koi pond is made only for the koi fishes. They are a kind of gold fish. Koi fishes are the Japanese versions of goldfish. The koi pond is different from a normal water garden. It limits the plant life inside the waterscape as Koi fish eats some plants. A koi pond needs to be large in size as the fish grows very fast. Experts would recommend a koi pond of not less than 1000 gallons in volume. The depth of the pond should also be at least 3-4 feet deep.

The water garden on the other hand contains both fishes and aquatic plants. For the moderate climates, water garden needs least 2 feet of depth. For the colder climes, a depth of at least 12" to 16" of water below the freeze zone is required.

The first step to create a water garden is to select the location. The waterscape is truly enjoyable if installed near the home. One can also shrink the pond into a pot and an aquarium can be formed. If one plans to build a larger waterscape then the pond should be positioned in a way to avoid pond overflow during rains. The pond should also be open enough to attract the wildlife including birds and butterflies.

Make sure that the water body is not too close to the trees so that the fertilizers, chemicals, and organic debris like falling leaves and garbage dont fall into the pond. The pond should get 4 to 6 hours of direct sun light if it has water lilies and proper shading planned for fish. The regular use of pump to renew the water makes the fish and the plants healthier. The pumps help to keep the filter, fountain, or waterfall running. Water garden can be given the desired shape with proper usage of the available space and planned digging.

The selection of plants is equally important as the fishes for the water garden. The popular choices of aqua plants for the water garden include:

* Floaters (to prevent water algae)
* Oxygenating grasses (to maintain the PH balance)
* Bog plants
* Deep-water plants (prevents algae and keep the water cool)

Fountains make water gardens more beguiling. The process of installation is very simple and the sound of water makes a peaceful diversion.

Bondo Boatyard Resin for marine applications, as found in boating supply stores, along with fiberglass cloth if needed to bridge large gaps or recreate form.

I have the Drinkwell Platinum Fountain, but has an electrical cord attachment for power. I was wondering if anyone knows of solar or battery operated Pet Fountains as I would like to place one in the cat pen where there is no electrical power points.

I had thought of solar powered ornamental water features, but they don't have the water capacity and filtering system that pet fountains have.

Many thank for any suggestions.

I can't come up with any product except this conversion gizmo that you'd have to import from England!

I strongly suspect that you could make something on your own, I mean for converting the existing fountain to solar. In fact, I know it can be done. Do I know how? No.

I suggest you re-post this question in the green living section and others like the geeky ones. Include info like how many watts the fountain uses.

ihave a water feature in my garden?

i have a water feature in my garden and recently i found little red worm type things in the water,i havnt a clue wot they are and i was wondering how or can i get rid of them

I have two water features ( Flash Git ) and invariably they contain all manner of strange things. Birds always use it as a water fountain - bird bath - toilet. The only real solution is to flush it out often, do NOT use any detergents. As an add on make sure you drain it completely in the winter and wrap the pump in plastic to stop it freezing up. If it is small take it into the garage or shed. Hope it helped.
